It is essential that before students begin to learn how to read, they should gain proper facility in the skill of speaking. They must also be taught to listen to the words of the language being spoken. The student may be familiar with simple words in their mother tongue, but not in English. We must remember that even though Grammar is essential, the student must acquire the skill of how to pronounce and place the words in a sentence.
1. These readers try to aid this concept through practical activities and concrete examples.
2. The primary objective of this series is encourage the student to acquire reading, writing and speaking skills.
3. Vocabulary in each lesson has been introduced in a phased and diplomatic manner. New structures and correct pronunciations are dealt with.
4. By making appropriate exercises and list of new words a part of each lesson, it will help the student to progress systematically in learning a new language.
5. In Readers 6, 7 and 8 an explanatory synopsis of the lesson has been incorporated to help the student experience the essence of what they are going to read about.
6. The series includes workbooks with additional exercises for practice. All the workbooks are closely related to the main readers.
ADVICE TO TEACHERS
• My advice to teachers of English is to familiarize the students with how to speak the language before introducing them to reading. This can be done through practicing small simple sentences in the classroom. Parents can help a great deal by repeating what the teacher does in class.
• The exercises given with each lesson should be followed immediately afterwards by oral and written exercises in the Reader and Workbook.
• We hope that this series of Readers and workbooks 1 to 8 will achieve the purpose for what they have been published.
